Voz inglesa que se usa, en el lenguaje del fútbol, con el sentido de ‘centrocampista cuyas tareas son básicamente defensivas’. Debe sustituirse en español por equivalencias como pivote —forma preferida en España— o por los términos medio(campista), volante o centrocampista, seguidos del adjetivo defensivo o del complemento especificador de contención: «Quizás un doble pivote en el centro del campo permitiría a los hombres de las bandas ahorrar energías en el trabajo defensivo» (DVasco [Esp.] 4.5.99); «Un solo volante de contención tendrá la responsabilidad de neutralizar el juego del rival en el medio» (Observador [Ur.] 6.5.97); «Los delanteros paraguayos decepcionaron y los goles vinieron por intermedio del mediocampista de contención» (Universal [Ven.] 8.1.97); «Para enviar al campo al medio defensivo Ignacio Ambriz» (DYucatán [Méx.] 9.9.96); «El centrocampista defensivo Steffen Freund queda definitivamente descartado» (Universal [Ven.] 30.6.96).
