1. Voz tomada del inglés set, que se usa en español con los sentidos siguientes:
a) ‘Conjunto de objetos de las mismas características o destinados a un mismo fin’: «Así lo informó Melvin Antonio Rocha, [...] al recibir varios molinos y un set de repuestos» (Prensa [Nic.] 1.4.97); «Se prueba el set de sudadera y jeans» (Santiago Sueño [P. Rico 1996]); «Fernando Paulsen dona un set de camisas con poco uso a los Traperos de Emaús» (Hoy [Chile] 30.12.96-5.1.97); «Interpretaron un romántico set de boleros» (Nación [C. Rica] 8.12.96). Con este sentido es preferible emplear las voces españolas juego (o estuche), serie o conjunto, según los casos.
b) ‘Plató cinematográfico o televisivo’: «En un set de televisión, Natalia Denegri y Fernanda Villar llegaron a las manos» (Clarín [Arg.] 19.1.97). Con este sentido es preferible el uso de los términos plató o estudio, más tradicionales en español y perfectamente equivalentes.
c) En el tenis y algunos otros deportes, ‘cada una de las partes con tanteo independiente en que se divide un encuentro’: «La tenista española [...] comenzó jugando un primer set irregular» (Vanguardia [Esp.] 21.4.94). Aunque con este sentido está generalizado el uso del anglicismo, no hay que olvidar que manga es el término español equivalente: «En el cierre de la segunda manga, Gamonal conservó su servicio» (Época [Chile] 5.11.97).
2. Su plural es sets (→ plural, 1h): «Tras cinco sets [...] consiguió clasificarse para la cuarta ronda» (Vanguardia [Esp.] 2.7.95).
