La voz inglesa gospel (‘música religiosa propia de las comunidades afronorteamericanas’ y ‘canción perteneciente a este estilo musical’) puede hispanizarse fácilmente en la forma góspel, escrita con tilde por ser palabra llana terminada en consonante distinta de -n o -s ( tilde2, 1.1.2). Su plural debe ser góspeles ( plural, 1g). No obstante, para designar la canción es preferible emplear la expresión espiritual negro o, simplemente, espiritual, calcos del inglés (Negro) spiritual: «Canta por igual La Marsellesa en París [...] que un espiritual negro» (Abc [Esp.] 1.6.89). Menos recomendable es la expresión negro espiritual, que traslada al español el orden inglés, lengua en la que se antepone siempre el adjetivo al sustantivo.
