Voz inglesa que se usa con cierta frecuencia en español con los sentidos de ‘disco fonográfico de corta duración, que normalmente contiene un solo tema musical en cada cara’ y ‘tema musical de la cara principal de un disco de este tipo’. Es anglicismo innecesario, pues en español está ya asentado, con ambos sentidos, el calco sencillo: «Esta versión punk del famoso bolero fue escogida como el primer sencillo del disco» (Tiempo [Col.] 4.9.96).
2. En el español americano es frecuente el empleo del anglicismo, normalmente en la forma plural singles, con el significado de ‘partido de tenis en el que se enfrentan solo dos jugadores’. También en este caso resulta innecesario, ya que puede sustituirse por la voz española individual(es): «En el primer encuentro de individuales el surafricano Wayne Ferreira consiguió igualar la puntuación al imponerse al sueco Thomas Enqvist» (Universal [Ven.] 7.4.97).
3. En el Cono Sur se emplea a veces la voz inglesa para referirse a la habitación de hotel que solo dispone de una cama individual. Es anglicismo evitable, pues este tipo de habitación se denomina en español individual o sencilla: «Una habitación individual cuesta 3455 pesetas y una doble 6320» (Abc [Esp.] 5.5.89); «El alojamiento por noche va desde 60 000 pesos en habitación sencilla, hasta 107 000 la gran suite» (Tiempo [Col.] 13.2.97).
