Voz inglesa usada con frecuencia en español, especialmente en los países de América del Sur. Es anglicismo evitable, pues en todos los casos pueden encontrarse términos españoles de sentido equivalente:
a) Cuando significa ‘resultado obtenido en relación con los medios o el esfuerzo invertidos’ o ‘utilidad que rinde una persona o cosa’, puede sustituirse por los términos españoles resultado(s) o rendimiento; así, en «El ex ministro es la figura que necesita el Gobierno para mejorar su performance en las elecciones legislativas de octubre» (Clarín [Arg.] 19.1.97), pudo decirse mejorar su(s) resultado(s); en «El motor [...] tiene mejor performance que el anterior» (Clarín [Arg.] 24.4.97), debió decirse mejor rendimiento. En otros contextos puede sustituirse por funcionamiento o comportamiento, como en «La reinserción del Perú y la buena performance de nuestra economía han permitido la disponibilidad de líneas de crédito de mediano plazo» (Expreso [Perú] 21.5.97).
b) Se usa con frecuencia en el mundo del espectáculo para designar la acción de actuar o interpretar un papel o una pieza musical: «Se convirtió en la actriz más joven en ganar un premio Tony, por su performance en la obra» (Clarín [Arg.] 23.10.00); «Es de destacar la performance del guitarrista Germán Daffunchio» (Polimeni Luca [Arg. 1991]); en estos casos debe sustituirse por los términos españoles actuación o interpretación. También es innecesario su empleo con el sentido de ‘representación (de teatro, danza, etc.)’: «Esa misma noche se realizará una performance de danza del grupo Pata de Cabra» (Caretas [Perú] 17.10.96); en estos casos puede sustituirse el anglicismo por los términos españoles espectáculo o representación.
