Forma tradicional española del nombre antiguamente usado para referirse a la India. En el uso actual puede designar, bien la región septentrional de esta república asiática, bien el conjunto de territorios de lengua hindi o, incluso, todo el subcontinente indio. Se usa normalmente con artículo: «La enana nos dijo que era sánscrito, el idioma mágico del Indostán» (Jodorowsky Pájaro [Chile 1992]). No debe usarse en español la forma inglesa Hindustan; tampoco ⊕Hindostán, grafía de escasa tradición en español, a pesar de su mayor cercanía al étimo persa Hindostan (‘tierra de los hindúes’). Aunque se han usado también las formas indostaní e indostanés, se recomienda para el gentilicio la forma indostano: «También ellos, chinos, indostanos o árabes, son herméticos e indescifrables» (Paz Laberinto [Méx. 1950-59]).
